Our Story

The South Melbourne Athletic Club (SMAC) has a rich history dating back to 1928 when it began as the Middle Park Church of Christ Amateur Athletic Club. Over the years, we’ve proudly carried the names Middle Park Amateur Athletic Club and South Melbourne Harriers.

Moments of Pride

SMAC has a legacy of excellence, particularly in marathon running.  In 1973, we were the strongest marathon club in the state!  We celebrated our 50th anniversary in 1978 with a commemorative 50k run along the Yarra River.  In 1981, our Life Member, Jim Crawford, made history as the first Australian to complete 100 marathons.

Evolving to Meet the Times

In recent decades, SMAC has made a name for itself in cross country and road racing.  We became part of the South Melbourne District Sports Club in 2007, expanding our athletic community.

SMAC Today

As of February 2025, we’re a growing, vibrant club of around 90 members, including a strong junior cohort.  While many of our athletes, both senior and junior, compete at elite levels, we welcome everyone.  Our focus is inclusivity and helping you achieve your goals, whatever your aspirations may be.
